You may see the initials HAAM and wonder what it is? If you’re a musician, it can be a lifesaver!
In a recent article in Austin Monthly, Ray Benson along with several others in Austin’s music world, realized that a major component of the music world was missing: affordable health care for the people who make Austin the Live Music Capital of the World.
In response, Benson, who was on the board of SIMS, a mental health counseling foundation for musicians, co-founded the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians in 2005. With help from the late Robin Shivers, who had worked for years in the Seton health care system, Benson convinced the St. David’s Foundation to chip in for dental care. “These are things that everybody understands, so it was a very easy sell,” he says. “There have been folks that come to us and say, ‘You saved my life.’”
Most musicians don’t have insurance so they can’t afford preventive health care, including primary medical care, basic dental services and mental health counseling.
Ray Benson is honoring the organization he started by holding his 65th Birthday Bash on March 15 at GSD&M, with a performance by Asleep at the Wheel. Proceeds will go toward HAAM’s Robin Shivers Endowment.
