Mike and the Moonpies

Honky tonkers, dancehall guitar slingers, Country music players Mike and the Moonpies are on the scene loud and proud and we couldn’t be happier to have them!

To me, and I know I’m not the only one, hearing their type of music coming through my speakers makes me happy.  There’s so many reasons but I think it all comes down to the type of music they proudly release and perform.

Lead singer Mike Harmeier’s music tastes were influenced heavily by his grandfather. Even though his grandpa passed away when Mike was very young, he has vivid memories of listening to great music with him. “My grandpa passed when I was only 7, so I have very few memories of our time together, but the ones I do have are very vivid,” Harmeier says. “I spent my afternoons as a kid, drinking sprite at the bar with my grandpa and playing songs on the jukebox – Randy Travis, George Strait, Clint Black, The Allman Brothers, The Marshall Tucker Band, Bob Seger, stuff like that. I wanted this record to sound like that jukebox.”

Listening to this solid new (and 3rd) project Mockingbird from the Moonpies, I was happily taken back to a time when Country music was, ya know, Country.

I LOVED track #2, “Say It Simply,” simply because I can hear a fiddle and a steel guitar!  Don’t get me wrong it’s a well written song, too.

The title track “Mockingbird” had me tapping my toes and nodding my head.  Always a good sign of a great song!

“Never Leaving Texas” makes me think of the late great Gary Stewart…not the vocals but the lyrics!  Give it a listen and you’ll hear what I’m thinking.

I can totally see myself dancing the night away while listening to them play “Delilah!”  Heck, I was dancing in my chair!  Fun, fun, fun!

And what can I say about the last track, “Miserable Man?”  Makes me want to drink a shot of whiskey and feel sorry for  the characters in the song living out A TRUE COUNTRY storyline.

Needless to say great music is ALIVE and WELL with these boys from Austin.  Mockingbird is downright wonderful from track one to track ten and I happily give it a resounding YEEHAW!
