What makes up a Justin van Sant set list? A mix of Merle Haggard, Garth Brooks, Kevin Fowler and Pat Green with a little fiddle thrown in. And Justin says “All of that together makes us unique and makes us stand out.”
And that’s just one of the reasons why the crowds at his shows are growing and growing. Not to mention the fact his fun loving personality and his original music are drawing folks in as well. And these are just a few of the reasons why I thought it was important to put the spotlight on Justin van Sant!
Katie: You are ALWAYS “on” meaning you are the constant performer…where did that come from? Was there someone in your life who helped you learn that or did it come naturally?
Justin: Growing up as the oldest of 4 kids, I was always looking for a way to stand out. Performing was my way of doing this. Also, I was always the class clown growing up. Now I’m just known by my nieces and nephew as crazy Uncle Justin!
If you’ve been to one of our shows, you know the kind of show me and the boys put on. Always high energy, always uptempo. You don’t have to even like Texas Country music to enjoy our shows. You just have to be ready to party!
Katie: Most folks might not know you’re a part of triplets…do your siblings also sing? If not, what are their talents?
Justin: All of us can sing. My sister actually taught me how to harmonize and occasionally, one of my brothers will join me on stage. I was the only one who joined the choir in high school and eventually at the University of Texas. I was cool like that…haha!
All my siblings are talented. My triplet sister works at a winery in Sonoma, CA as the assistant winemaker and recently started her own wine label, Jaclynn Renee Wines. My triplet brother has his hands full with the family landscaping business while my little brother is a professional fisherman and certified boat captain.
Katie: How often does the songwriting bug bite ya? Describe your songwriting process? Does it change or is it the same every time?
Justin: The urge to write hits me on a daily basis. When you hear something or see something, you’ve got to at least jot it down so you don’t forget it. When it comes to the songwriting process, it changes every time. Some of my favorite songs I’ve ever written didn’t take more than 1/2 an hour to write. The inspiration just comes rushing through me. It’s a pretty awesome feeling!
The songs I’ve written with my band usually occur at rehearsal. When we show up, we have every intention of cleaning up our set list but all it takes is one of the band mates playing something cool and next thing we know, we are hammering out a new tune. Typical musicians, we all have short attention spans.
Katie: Will there be new music coming soon?
Justin: Our most recent set lists comprise of 3/4 new music. We can not wait to track these songs! They’ve been crowd favorites and represent the country-rock sound we’ve been pumping out at all the honky tonks.
We’re ready for it, Justin! If you want to attend one of Justin’s shows and find out for yourself what he and his band are all about, click here: http://justinvansant.com/.
