A lot of music snobs are always shouting that artists MUST ALWAYS perform their original tunes and I say heck no to that! There are some incredible tunes that have been covered by Texas/Red Dirt artists and here are just a few of my faves:
1. Wade Bowen “Please Come to Boston” (Dave Loggins)
2. Micky and the Motorcars “Stay With Me” (Faces)
3. Mike McClure “Into the Mystic” (Van Morrison)
4. Ryan James “Everything That Glitters (is Not Gold)” (Dan Seals)
5. Chapter 11 with Aubrey Lynn England “Whiskey & You” (Chris Stapleton)
As you might expect, I had a HUGE response when I asked “Who does the best Cover song” on social media and because of all of the comments I will have to do a two or three part posting! (Certainly a good problem to have!) It was fun remembering these while listening to the songs and watching some of the videos. Hope you enjoy it too!
Twitter follower Farrah Daniels said ”JoshFuller doing ‘Dinosaur’ by Hank Williams Jr. I never liked the song until I heard him do it.”
Cross Canadian Ragweed – “Stranglehold” (Ted Nugent)
Mark Allan Atwood & Brimstone “Stormy Monday” (T. Bone Walker)
My buddy on Facebook, Justin Fulcher, reminded me how great this one is, “Rodney Parker cover of Atlantic City is one of my favorite covers.” (Bruce Springsteen)
Corb Lund – “MC Horses” (Corb’s from way, way north…Canada to be exact, but his music fits right in.) (Ian Tyson)
Sean McConnell – “Dirty Diana” (And Sean may be from TN, but he, too fits right in.) (Michael Jackson)
Sean McConnell – “Locked Out Of Heaven” (Bruno Mars)
No Justice – “With or Without You” (U2)
Stoney LaRue – “Box #10″ (Jim Croce)
Brad Beheler from Galleywinter.com said: ” There are many great ones. But there is only one winner in this category for me.” (This version is incredible!) (Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston version)
My friend, Jessica Timmons head honchoette at the Redneck Country Club, commented “Jason Isbell’s ‘Pancho + Lefty.’ Oh! And Willie Nelson’s ‘Georgia on my Mind!'” (Townes Van Zandt / Ray Charles version)
Roger Creager – “Redemption Song” (Bob Marley)
Robert Earl Keen – “Train Song” (Todd Snider)
“Six Market used to cover Jonathan Tyler’s ‘Young Love’ – that was my favorite but I can very easily agree with some of the above. Mike McClure‘s ‘Into the Mystic’ is amazing and of course I agree with Brad Beheler!” – Artist Development’s Kimberly Brian on Facebook.
Walt Wilkins and the Mystiqueros -“Dancing in the Moonlight” (Van Morrison)
Michael Berry, Czar of Talk Radio, chimed in on Facebook and said, “Cory Morrow’s ‘Beer’ is better than the ska original by Reel Big Fish.” (He’s definitely right on this one of course!)
Thanks again to all those who contributed!
